WNBA Shock Draw Above-Average Crowd Despite Persistent Relocation Rumors

An announced crowd of 5,987 attended the WNBA Tulsa Shock's home game against the Lynx as rumors fly that a "portion of the team's ownership is interested in moving to team out of Tulsa," according to Dillon Hollingsworth of the TULSA WORLD. The crowd, which was 8% better than the Shock's 5,522 average through seven home games this season, was "dotted with yellow T-shirts and signs that read, 'Save Our Shock'" (TULSA WORLD, 7/20). Hollingsworth noted a group of season-ticket holders began the "Save Our Shock" movement, and on Friday, they "unfurled a 'Save Our Shock' banner on the side of a building" in downtown Tulsa. Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett Jr. on Friday asked Shock Majority Owner Bill Cameron "to meet with him so the mayor can attempt to persuade him not to take the team away." There has been "no statement from anyone associated with the Shock about the persistent rumor" that the team could move to Dallas. Former Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor has "sent a letter to WNBA President Laurel Richie pleading for her to keep the Shock in Tulsa" (TULSA WORLD, 7/18).
