Spieth's Success Leads To Skyrocketing Social Media Presence Ahead Of British Open

Jordan Spieth’s social media count -- across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram -- has now crossed the 1 million threshold (1.06 million) following his playoff win at the PGA Tour John Deere Classic, according to data from analytics firm MVPindex. Spieth, who turned pro prior to the start of the '13 season, saw steady growth during his first full season on Tour, with a 70% spike in his total social media count after finishing second at the ’14 Masters. He was only at around half a million on social media when he won the green jacket this April, seeing a 76% jump in the month after capturing his win at Augusta. Spieth also saw a 13% jump after taking home the U.S. Open in June. He has now seen growth in excess of 730,000 followers across the three platforms since the start of the year, more than any other golfer in the world. Second behind Spieth in this metric is Rory McIlroy at just over 721,000. Rounding out the top five are Tiger Woods, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler, respectively.

SINCE YOU MENTION IT: Spieth saw 38,500 mentions on Twitter in the week following his win at The Masters. He then saw 33,600 mentions in the week following the U.S. Open. This compares favorably to the top performers following Wimbledon. For the period of July 7-13, Roger Federer was the most-mentioned tennis player with 30,446 mentions, well ahead of Wimbledon-winner Novak Djokovic. Serena Williams saw a 23,119 mentions during the same period. However, Spieth’s mentions fell below that of Warriors G Stephen Curry in the seven days following the NBA Finals. Curry during that period saw 79,888 mentions. Spieth was closer to Cavaliers F LeBron James, who had 47,564 mentions after the Finals.

A CONNECTION IS MADE: Spieth has made 32 mentions of his sponsors on Facebook and Twitter since the start of the year (Under Armour, Titleist, Super Stroke grips, AT&T and Rolex). Those mentions have led to 92,192 points of engagement (like/shares/comments on Facebook; retweets/replies/favorites/user profile clicks/URL clicks/hashtag clicks/detail expansion/permalink clicks on Twitter). Those points of engagement have led to 8.89 million total impressions on the two platforms. Meanwhile, 50% of Spieth’s followers on the two platforms are under the age of 35. His sweet spots are the 25-34 and 35-44 demos. He also trends higher among adults 18-24 than among any demo 45+.
