Apple In Talks To Bring Local Network Streams To TV App, Might Be Working On NFL Deal

Apple is "making broadcast networks the centerpiece of its cable-killer TV app -- and talks with all four networks are rapidly gaining momentum," according to Claire Atkinson of the N.Y. POST. Sources said that Apple’s discussions with ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox "initially foundered over the tech giant’s desire to offer on the soon-to-launch service local live TV feeds streamed on any Apple device." But nets "don’t control affiliate feeds," so Apple CEO Tim Cook’s team "asked the networks to obtain those rights -- instead of having Apple chase those rights around the country itself." The sources said that the nets are "close to having the right to negotiate with Apple on behalf of their affiliates." Cook and his "top media negotiator," Apple Senior VP/Internet Software & Services Eddy Cue, "were spotted at Allen & Co.’s mogulfest, at the famed Sun Valley duck pond, chatting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Patriots owner Bob Kraft -- leading to speculation over whether Apple is brewing an NFL offering" (N.Y. POST, 7/14).

THE BELL TOLLS: The GLOBE & MAIL's Bradshaw & Dobby note Bell Media starting next year will offer its streaming service, CraveTV, "directly to any Canadian with an Internet connection." The service, which launched in December with a "low" C$4 price tag, was "offered only to TV customers." But in recent months, it was "increasingly isolated in its efforts to keep video streaming linked to television subscriptions, and will now open up the service starting Jan. 1, 2016" (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/14).
