Women's Tennis Players Differ In Fashion Selections For Upcoming Wimbledon Fortnight

The fashion choices for female tennis players competing at Wimbledon over the next two weeks "will be both catwalk statement and rebellion," according to David Brown of the LONDON TIMES. For women, a specially designed Wimbledon dress "is now a major talking, and selling, point." Caroline Wozniacki "will lead the way in a dress by Stella McCartney." Her adidas Barricade dress "features a cutting-edge mesh while the yellow strip on the shorts is designed to force the notoriously prickly Wimbledon judges to consult their rule book." Wozniacki "admits that despite being one of the world's top sports women, fashion still matters on court." She said, "If I feel good on court than it's one less thing to worry about. It gives me confidence and the freedom to really focus on my game." Brown notes Wimbledon's enforcement of all-white outfits while "lurid clothing is favoured at other grand slams has been criticised by some commentators but remains popular among players." Wozniacki: "We get to wear a lot of bright colors during the year on tour, so it's actually nice to wear something classic on court." Brown lists the apparel choices of several top female players, including Ana Ivanovic wearing adidas’ Fall All Premium dress, featuring "spaghetti straps crisscrossed in the back." Venus Williams has "designed her own dress," as the Fleur Du Monde Wimbledon features a “racer” back and traditional scoop neck. That is available from Williams' EleVen clothing company. Jelena Jankovic is the "top representative for Fila and will wear the Spring Lawn dress with mesh inserts on both front and back" (LONDON TIMES, 6/29).

HERE COMES THE SUN: WOMEN'S WEAR DAILY's Nina Jones noted Ivanovic has been tapped by Shiseido as the "ambassador for its WetForce sun protection line." Ivanovic "will appear in a campaign for WetForce, set to be shot in London next month" (WWD.com, 6/26).
