The Good Stuff: Alonzo Mourning Breaks Ground On Affordable Housing Project

Basketball HOFer ALONZO MOURNING on Monday broke ground on a $22.8M “affordable housing project” in Miami. Construction “has already started” for the Courtside Family Apartments in the Overtown neighborhood (MIAMI HERALD, 6/23)....The Hornets on Monday joined with FS Carolinas/SportSouth and Bank of America in its “Swarm to Serve” effort. The three groups worked on three separate projects “to benefit military personnel.” The service projects “consisted of refurbishing the veteran’s center at Central Piedmont Community College, packing care kits for local veterans in need and helping make home repairs for a local veteran in the community” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/23)....The Jewish Museum Milwaukee has a summerlong exhibit sponsored by the Brewers called "Chasing Dreams," which “celebrates diversity in professional baseball.” Former MLB Commissioner BUD SELIG, along with his wife, SUE, and Brewers Owner MARK ATTANASIO and his wife, DEBBIE, are “honorary chairs on the exhibit's committee.” Notable names “will be at the museum this summer for baseball-related panels” (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/23)....Time Warner Cable’s News NY1 affiliate today at the N.Y. Stock Exchange recognized 25 high school students who excel in academics, athletics and the community as part of the 16th Scholar Athlete of the Week luncheon. Former NBAer JOHN STARKS was on hand to help honor the students. Each athlete featured will be given a $1,000 scholarship (THE DAILY).
