Blackhawks Under Rocky Wirtz Considered Role Model For Other Chicago Teams

Every professional in Chicago "could learn something" from the Blackhawks, "particularly the people running the other sports teams in town," according to David Haugh of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Each team "could benefit from the Hawks' strong but clear approach to problem-solving by asking themselves WWHD: What Would the Hawks Do?" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 6/20). Also in Chicago, Phil Rosenthal wrote the Blackhawks "were reborn" when Chair Rocky Wirtz assumed control of the team in '07 following his father's death. He had the opportunity to "bring back his father's team." Rocky "had to be his own man, bring in his own lieutenants," from team President & CEO John McDonough "on down." They "needed a new game plan, a new urgency and new results after what amounted to a lost decade." The Blackhawks under Rocky "patched up connections to star players from the franchise's history to restore a touchstone for disenchanted, disenfranchised fans." At the same time, the Blackhawks "stuck their business plan in the shredder, developing a new multi-tiered 21st century approach." Rosenthal: "Rocky Wirtz made his dad proud. Even though dad wouldn't approve" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/20).
