Boras Claims MLB Network Prohibited Analysts From Mentioning His Company During Draft

MLB agent Scott Boras claims that MLB Network has "'censored' analysts from mentioning his company" during its coverage of the MLB Draft and that it "failed to acknowledge the beneficial role his group plays in advising amateur players," according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com. Boras, who is an adviser to seven first- or second-round picks this year, wrote in a text message, "What I find interesting is, MLB has censored its announcers from referencing our company. MLB is not committed to a free journalistic standard." Crasnick notes Boras' name "was referenced on one occasion during Monday night's broadcast, when MLB Network analyst Greg Amsinger cited the agent's involvement as a likely reason for the two players slipping." The net's Jonathan Mayo "half-jokingly referred to him as 'Lord Voldemort'" during the coverage. Boras also said that MLB Network's draft coverage "has fostered an inaccurate perception that he has strained relationships with teams, and some of his players have fallen in the draft and lost money as a result." MLB Network officials "declined to respond directly to Boras' comments" (ESPN.com, 6/10).
