Marketers Could Pay Seven Figures For Sponsorship Of American Pharoah

For Leverage Agency, N.Y., the marketing firm "tasked with lining up sponsorships for Triple Crown contender American Pharoah, the word 'American' is a dream because it appears in so many corporate monikers," according to Richard Morgan of the N.Y. POST. Leverage Agency Founder & CEO Ben Sturner is "pitching potential marketers on the 'chance to be part of history.'" He said, "We’re aiming for seven-figure deals" (N.Y. POST, 5/23). Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Darren Rovell reported American Pharoah's owner, Zayat Stables, on May 18 "filed for six trademarks, including 'American Pharoah Triple Crown' and 'American Pharoah Champion Racehorse.'" They appeared "for the first time on the U.S. Patent & Trademark website Friday." The trademark filings said that the phrases Zayat Stables "seeks to protect could be used on everything from T-shirts and hats to posters, jewelry and wristbands" (ESPN.com, 5/22).
