Names In The News

Oregon State AD BOB DE CAROLIS' decision to resign, effective June 30, "was at least in part" because OSU President ED RAY "recently informed him that his contract would not be extended" beyond '16. De Carolis: "I respect that. When you first hear those words, it hits you in the gut. But very rarely do people stay on a job for 17 years -- 13 as the athletic director -- and walk away on their own accord." He added, "We're all good. It's a good thing for everybody, and I think it's a good thing for Oregon State" (OREGONLIVE.com, 5/20).

DURHAM DOLLARS: Duke basketball coach MIKE KRZYZEWSKI "received, again by far, the highest pay of any Duke employee, receiving a total compensation" of $7.3M for '13-14. That includes just under $2M in base, $1M in bonus, $1.3M in deferred or retirement, and $3M in other compensation. The pay is more than he received in '12-13, less than he received in '11-12, and "roughly equal to what Duke paid him" in '10-11 (BIZJOURNALS.com, 5/20). Duke's federal tax return stated that "just more than" $2.3M of Krzyzewski's pay "had been reported as deferred compensation on prior years' returns. Meanwhile, Duke football coach DAVID CUTCLIFFE's total compensation was $2.05M, including "just under" $1.5M in base compensation and "slightly more than $475,000 in bonus pay." AD KEVIN WHITE's total "was a little more than $950,000, including about $865,000 in base pay and no bonus money." Women's basketball coach JOANNE MCCALLIE's total compensation was "just under" $1M, including more than $760,000 "in base pay and $156,000 in bonuses" (USA TODAY, 5/21).

MY BLUE HEAVEN: Kentucky basketball coach JOHN CALIPARI's contract extension means his deal "now expires on March 30, 2022, and guarantees him" $54M over the next seven seasons. He will make $7M next season, $7.25M in '16-17, $7.75M in '17-18 and $8M in "each of the last four years of the contract." There are "no bonuses for on-court performance and the only incentive, as was the case under the old deal," is for the program to maintain a score of 950 in the NCAA's APR. That would "earn him another $50,000 per year" (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 5/21).

NAMES: The running shoes worn by ROGER BANNISTER when he broke the four-minute mile in '54 "will go on the block on Sept. 10 in London at Christie's Auction house." Christie's yesterday said that the shoes are "expected to fetch" between $47,000 and $78,000 (AP, 5/20)....Former Alabama State AD STACY DANLEY has "won his wrongful termination lawsuit" against the school and was awarded $140,216.87 (MONTGOMERY ADVERTISER, 5/19)....St. Louis-based Precinct Bar & Grill, co-owned by former MLBer JIM EDMONDS, "has closed" (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 5/21)....Seahawks and Trail Blazers Owner PAUL ALLEN on Monday night "threw a floating Bollywood-themed party at the Cannes Film Festival," gathering an array of actors, including AMY POEHLER, JOHN C. REILLY, LEONARDO DICAPRIO and ANTONIO BANDERAS, aboard his 414-foot yacht. A source said that guests "checked out the yacht’s amenities including a swimming pool, two helicopter landing pads with parked choppers, a submarine, a fleet of Jet Skis, plus a cinema and recording studio" (N.Y. POST, 5/20)....NASCAR driver BRAD KESELOWSKI and his girlfriend, PAIGE WHITE, announced the birth of their first child on Twitter yesterday. The couple "did not immediately announce the name of the child, who was born Tuesday evening" (ESPN.com, 5/20).
