NFLPA Asks Court To Find NFL In Contempt Relating To Peterson Suspension

The NFLPA yesterday asked a federal court to compel the NFL to implement its February ruling overturning the suspension of Vikings RB Adrian Peterson. The union also asked the court to find the league in contempt. While the NFL reinstated Peterson, the NFLPA wants the arbitrator to make a new ruling that Peterson can not be punished under the personal conduct policy that existed prior to September '14. The union wants that precedent as it argues the 10-game suspension of Cowboys DE Greg Hardy should be overturned because it is predicated on the new policy, not the old one that was in place when Hardy’s alleged domestic violence altercation occurred. The union contends the NFL is treating its appeal of the lower-court decision as a stay, which it never sought. Citing correspondences between the NFL and the arbitrator, Harold Henderson, the union contends the league is illegally ignoring the lower court’s ruling. In response, the NFL in a statement said, “There is no basis for the union’s action. The district court's decision on Adrian Peterson is on appeal to the Eighth Circuit. In the meantime, Mr. Peterson was reinstated more than a month ago and he may fully participate in team activities. The remaining disciplinary issue concerns the amount of 2014 pay to be forfeited by Mr. Peterson and that issue is presently before the Court of Appeals.”
