Boston Athletic Assoc., Adidas, Marathon Sports To Jointly Run Boston Marathon Museum

A Boston Marathon museum that will be jointly run by the Boston Athletic Association, Boston-based retailer Marathon Sports and adidas is "scheduled to open a few blocks from the finish line on April 16 -- just four days before this year’s race," according to Luna & Borchers of the BOSTON GLOBE. Called the Boston Marathon RunBase, the 2,000-square-foot store will "feature Adidas products, offer free access to showers and changing rooms, and provide historical information about the 118-year-old race." The groups "expect the facility to serve as a gathering place for runners, who can store their belongings, change, and clean up after a quick lunch-break run." The retail section "will feature only Adidas shoes, clothing and other products, as well as exclusive running products not available elsewhere." adidas "financed construction of the store," while Marathon Sports "will be responsible for the retail operation." In an "unusual twist for Marathon Sports, its workers are expected to be marathon history buffs as well as shoe specialists." The BAA will "supply the marathon history and artifacts and receive royalties on official marathon-licensed gear." All three parties will "contribute to the rent" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/3). The AP's Jimmy Golen reported the facility will be a combination "clubhouse, interactive museum and retail store" that for the first time gives the marathon a "year-round, public presence." It will be the sixth RunBase for adidas, but the "first in the U.S." It will differ from other locations, "as well as the Nike store nearby, because of its association" with the race (AP, 4/2).

KEEP ON RUNNING: New Balance on Thursday announced the launch of its "Nobody Runs Like Boston" campaign, which highlights the brand's running heritage and ties to the city. The effort features Boston-themed limited edition footwear and apparel, as well as out-of-home ads and social media elements (New Balance). The Massachusetts-based apparel company this week "will take over the MBTA's Park Street Station and bus shelters throughout the city." Taglines will refer to the Boston Marathon as well as this past winter's historic snowfall (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/2).
