It seems like a week can’t go by without Bill Belichick showing up in headlines. Now, thanks in large part to the Super Bowl winning coach, the NFL will begin research on placing additional cameras around every NFL stadium.
Last week Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Belichick had gone on a tirade when the NFL turned down his request to add permanent cameras to the goal-lines of stadiums. League owners daringly claimed it would cost too much.
They have since responded to Belichick’s outrage and announced their willingness to begin research on placing additional cameras on stadium sidelines and goal-lines. Albert Breer of NFL Media tweeted that the league would begin research today.
The decision was made during the NFL’s annual meeting. The cameras would give referees more definitive angles of the most important plays.
The league is currently looking for the right technology that could be implemented into their current video setup, and would work best for all 31 stadiums.
This technology could be implemented as early as May, during the NFL’s annual spring meeting.
Surely the NFL has the money to pay for such technology. The question is whether they feel it adds to the game enough given the costs.
We can only hope more camera angles will cut down on the time it takes for referees to come to the correct decisions, given that just about every scoring play is now being reviewed.
