Nike Releases Tiger Woods' Wardrobe Plans For The Masters -- If He Plays

Tiger Woods "hasn't decided whether he'll play" in The Masters next month, but Nike on Monday released his "'scripting' -- also known as outfits -- for the first major of the season," according to Sean Zak of GOLF.com. The release "stated nothing in regards to Woods’ real decision for playing the event." All it means is that he will "hypothetically be wearing a white-gray combination on Thursday, a black shirt on Friday, a blue-gray combination on Saturday and a red shirt on Sunday." Scripting for other Nike golfers Rory McIlroy, Charl Schwartzel, Russell Henley and Seung-Yul Noh "were also released Monday morning" (GOLF.com, 3/23).

WARDROBE FUNCTION: USA TODAY’s Steve DiMeglio noted in recent years, clothing lines from companies such as Nike, Under Armour, Puma and adidas “have capitalized” on the attention major championships receive by “cleverly adopting a marketing angle to take advantage of the increased visibility.” Leading up to The Masters, for instance, companies “developed a clothing arrangement for their players.” As the first major “drew near, the companies e-mailed, tweeted and placed on their website the images of the outfits their players would wear in each round at Augusta National.” Golfers and Oakley endorsers Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson “have input on what colors and styles they'll wear but are more concerned with how they will perform in the outfits.” Watson: “I have a decent amount of input. It's a partnership, but let's be honest, Oakley knows clothes and they know what the consumers want, so they have the final say." He added, "I meet with Oakley all the time, and we discuss the look and the feel of the upcoming outfits. I think this year's outfits are awesome. The feel is better than it ever has been." Johnson said that he “doesn't offer a lot of input because Oakley knows what it's doing, but he will say yes or no” (USATODAY.com, 3/24).
