SPORTSNET.ca's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported the Blue Jays have considered "extensively retrofitting" Rogers Centre to "modernize the in-game experience." Blue Jays President & CEO Paul Beeston: "It really needs a major upgrade from the point of view of it’s 26 years old and it probably needs any type of amount from $200 million to $400 million to fix it up." Beeston wants the Blue Jays to "continue playing in downtown Toronto." Beeston: "People will criticize the stadium. You can't criticize the location" (SPORTSNET.ca, 3/18).

VIKING QUEST: In Minneapolis, Rochelle Olson reports the first sheets of glass for the new Vikings stadium are "on-site and ready to go up." The project will be a $1B "soaring glass structure," and the installation of the glass is "yet another sign of the swift progression on the building." Viracon, whose parent company is Minneapolis-based Apogee Enterprises Inc., "made the glass" (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 3/19).

STEEL RESERVE: In Pittsburgh, Tom Fontaine notes the Pittsburgh Stadium Authority is setting aside $1.9M to "cover architectural and engineering costs for a proposal to build a third North Shore parking garage." The garage "must replace at least 541 spaces lost to development of surface lots between Heinz Field and PNC Park under an agreement with the Steelers and Pirates." The stadium authority voted last night to approve a $3.8M operating budget for the fiscal year starting April 1, "including money for pre-construction costs related to the garage" (PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 3/19).

TAX RETURNS: In Atlanta, Greg Bluestein reported the Braves are "pursuing a lucrative tax break on construction materials for the new ballpark in Cobb County," but the team "will pass on other potential breaks for the mixed-use project that’s taking shape" next to it. Braves Exec VP/Business Operations Mike Plant said the team has “asked for nothing special" from the state or county for the $452M "play-live-work” complex that will feature Comcast’s regional HQ. Plant: “We do not ask, nor do we intend to ask, for any incentives for the mixed-use part." But Bluestein writes the ballpark is "another story" (AJC.com, 3/18).
