Minding My Business With MLS & Soccer United Marketing Senior VP/Media Seth Bacon

Name: Seth Bacon

Position: MLS & Soccer United Marketing Senior VP/Media

Age: 37

Where I’m from: York, Maine

Where I call home: N.Y.

Focusing on right now: The integration of our new TV deals with ESPN, Fox and Univision.

When not at the ballpark with his wife, Bacon
unwinds at home with his kids
Best advice: The one thing my parents always instilled in me was to take pride in everything you do. And that pride could be how hard you work on something, being accountable for decisions you make or any number of things. But just always own what you do, take pride in it and do it to the best of your ability.

Must for a new hire: Determination. I want someone who is willing to put in the time to get the job done. I also look for intellectual curiosity. I want someone who’s going to learn and be curious and ask questions on why things are done a certain way and are there better ways to do them.

Exec I admire the most: I’ve worked with a lot of good ones, but I’m really excited to be working with MLS Business Ventures President & Managing Dir GARY STEVENSON. With his background and expertise in the media industry, it’s going to have an impact on me personally and on MLS as well.

Best book I’ve read: I’m reading a book right now called “Saratoga” by RICHARD M. KETCHUM. It’s just a fascinating look back at a very pivotal moment in our country’s history. Primarily, I’m into reading non-fiction.

First thing in the morning: I check the old e-mail machine first thing. I check my phone to see what has happened overnight -- we do a lot of business in Europe -- so doing that helps me get my day started. On the train in, I'll look at the N.Y. Times or Wall Street Journal -- I have about a 45-minute ride.

Talking tech: I have a new Harmony remote that’s linked to my phone -- which allows me to not even reach for the remote anymore to turn my TV on. That’s been more impactful than I expected it to be.

Must have music: I have a very eclectic music taste -- it ranges from all ends of the spectrum, from classical to KANYE. Right now I’m listening to a band called DR. DOG. They’ve been around for a long time, and I’m really digging what they do.

Food for thought: The place we like to eat at most is at home. I love to cook, and I love to grill. You name it, I’ve never met a meat I didn’t like to grill. NASCAR also brought me to a lot of great places to eat. Babe’s Chicken in Roanoke, Texas, is great. That’s the best meal I’ve ever had.

How I unwind: Spending time with my two kids -- I have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old. We hang out a lot at the house. I’ve been very active in the Thomas the Tank Engine space lately.

Day in the life: In a lot of ways the job with MLS is similar to what it was at NASCAR in that I’m working with the same TV partners and the same subject matters. The learning curve isn't on the media side; it’s the difference between stock cars and soccer.
