Cost Of Cactus League Tickets On The Rise As Dynamic Pricing Becomes More Common

Ticket prices for Spring Training games in the Cactus League "have gone up and, in some cases, have reached or exceeded prices for regular-season games in some MLB stadiums," according to Peter Corbett of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Two front-row seats behind home plate for the March 28 Dodgers-Angels game at Tempe Diablo Stadium cost "$483.96 on the resale market." Elsewhere, two seats in the back of the Scottsdale Stadium grandstand for the March 22 split-squad Angels-Giants game are listed at $183 "on the Giants' Cactus League website." The Giants in '11 became "the first Cactus League team to start dynamic pricing." Tempe Diablo Stadium Manager Jerry Hall said that the Angels "adopted dynamic pricing last season, with tickets increasing by $5 to $20 per seat for weekend games at the 9,600-seat ballpark." Florida Sports Foundation Dir of Communications Nick Gandy said that "at least a handful of teams" in the Grapefruit League use dynamic pricing. Hall said, "Spring training has become a business. It's not like it used to be when you could buy a $5 lawn seat and sit with your family." He added that the higher prices "have not deterred fans," as the Angels "will sell out eight or nine of 15 home games this season." Giants Enterprises VP Sara Hunt said that 10 of the team's 17 Spring Training games "will be sold out." StubHub Communications Specialist Cameron Papp said that sales across the Cactus League "are up" 53% so far this season over last year (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 3/14).
