V Foundation, ACC Debut Ice Bucket-Style Social Media Fundraiser For Cancer Research

The V Foundation is working with the ACC to launch a new social media-based fundraising campaign for cancer research called the “V Throw Challenge.” Like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that raised more than $40M in a month’s time for research on Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the V Foundation and the ACC likewise are hoping the V Throw Challenge becomes a viral hit. The idea is for each ACC men’s basketball coach to video themselves shooting a free throw and, with each free throw, making a donation to the V Foundation. They will then challenge five others to take the challenge. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski’s V Throw will debut today and other coaches are expected to launch their videos on their own social media accounts. If users do not have access to a goal, then the ACC and the V Foundation encourage them to shoot wastepaper into a basket, use a Nerf hoop or create some other form of a V Throw. The schools and the ACC also will be using their digital and social media assets to spread the V Throw Challenge. V Foundation CEO Susan Braun is overseeing the launch of the challenge along with ACC Senior Associate Commissioner & Chief of External Affairs Amy Yakola; Raleigh-based Intrepid Marketing Group, the foundation’s PR agency; and Fishbait Marketing.
