Former NFLer Sean Morey Confirms Candidacy For NFLPA Exec Dir Position

Former NFLer Sean Morey, who served on the NFLPA Exec Committee that participated in the '11 CBA negotiations, confirmed last night that he is a candidate for NFLPA Exec Dir. Morey said, "I am actively developing a platform and support from player reps to become a viable candidate." Candidates must receive the written nomination of three player reps in order to be listed on the ballot for the election on March 15. Player reps can nominate more than one person. Morey declined to say how much support he has received from player reps so far. He is the third former NFLer and the fifth person to publicly declare a challenge to sitting Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith. The others are former NFLer Sean Gilbert, attorney Jim Acho, retired Admiral and former NFLer John Stufflebeem and attorney Andrew Smith. Gilbert has been publicly campaigning for the post for a year and is seen as the most serious challenger. Morey sent a lengthy letter to NFLPA President Eric Winston last week requesting detailed information on many financial, legal and health issues. Morey said Winston denied his request. Asked about that, Winston said, “I have no comment on the election or the process right now.“ Morey said he requested the information in order to help develop his campaign platform and his stand on issues affecting players, including the CBA and the proposal for an 18-game season. Morey also served as co-Chair of the union's Mackey-White traumatic brain injury committee in '09. Morey said, "I wouldn't be running if I didn't think a change was required."
