Univ. Of Texas Plans Talks On Expanding Alcohol Sales To Include Football Games

Fans continue to buy beer and wine at Univ. of Texas games a year after the rule's institution, as alcohol sales "brought in about a half a million dollars in revenue in the last year," but, alcohol is "still not available at Longhorn football games," according to Kevin Schwaller of Austin-based KXAN-NBC. Fans "can buy a Bud at sports like baseball, basketball and softball." University leaders "will be discussing the possibility of adding football to that list." UT men's AD Steve Patterson said that alcohol sales "is an issue of fan experience." He added, "It’s made us some money, I’m not going to deny that. It’s not going to change the overall economics of the department" (KXAN.com, 2/13).

SEMINOLES' MOMENT? In Tallahassee, Henry & Rossman report FSU is "waiting on final approvals and must hash out last-minute details before fans can buy beer at Dick Howser Stadium." For months, the university "has been considering such a move." If university administration and concessionaire Aramark "approve the idea, beer could be served this season." Sill, school Associate AD/Communications Rob Wilson said that many policy questions "remain, including placing a limit on the number of purchases, establishing separate vending locations and a cut-off time." The Univ. of South Florida "has sold beer at baseball games for at least the past five years." USF Assistant AD/Administration & External Affairs Lelo Prado: "I have to believe a place like Florida State, if they start selling, they are going to make a lot of money. It’s harder and harder to find (new) revenue. Everybody is trying figure out any way, every angle, to make more money" (TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, 2/16).
