David Stern Representing Development Firm In Talks For Massachusetts Casino

Connecticut-based Foxwoods Development Company is "among those interested in operating a resort casino that developers hope to build" on the site of a former power plant in New Bedford, Mass., according to Philip Marcelo of the AP. N.Y.-based KG Urban Enterprises is among the firms applying to develop the land, and KG adviser and former NBA Commissioner DAVID STERN on Thursday told the Massachusetts Gaming Commission that the company "needs up to two months to complete negotiations as it bids for the state's resort casino license." Stern added that the firm also is "in talks with two other casino operators." KG Urban and other applicants were given "until March 16 to file any outstanding information" (AP, 2/5). Stern said that KG Urban is "very close to a deal with either Foxwoods, or one of two other casino operators now in negotiations with the group." Stern did not name the other two, but said that he is "confident that once the KG Urban group secures a deal with an operator it will be able to obtain financing." In Boston, Sean Murphy notes Foxwoods "opened New England's first casino" in the early '90s (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/6).
