SAP Finds Success Through Experiential Tech Activation Sponsorship with NFL

In the week leading up to the Super Bowl, SAP will be providing fans and media with unique insights into what’s trending and how fans are talking about the big game on social media through the NFL.com Stats Zone (Image above)

Nearly 42 million people participated in some version of fantasy sports in 2014, according to the Fantasy Sports Trade Association. As many could guess, a large percentage of that comes from fantasy football.

While the National Football League now embraces fantasy football (even going so far as to require teams to display fantasy numbers inside stadiums), that was not always the case. Until 2008, the NFL outsourced all of its fantasy rights to CBS.

When the NFL finally realized how much money and opportunity they were giving away, they were already behind. ESPN and Yahoo! had been building a fantasy football enterprise since the early days of the Internet and had very loyal users.

So, the NFL decided to leverage its corporate partnerships to try to play a little bit of catch. In 2012, the NFL signed a deal with SAP to be the Official Business Software Solutions and Business Analytics Software Sponsor of the NFL.

The partnership allows SAP to leverage its technologies to help the league stay ahead of the game. In partnership, the two entities created the Player Comparison Tool, a first-ever statistical comparison platform that allows fantasy football players to see detailed information centered around five key metrics:

  • Performance
  • Matchup
  • Consistency
  • Upside
  • Intangibles

“The Player Comparison Tool allows fantasy football players to analyze their players and matchups like never before,” said Dan Fleetwood, Group Director of Sponsorships at SAP.

In order to make the Player Comparison Tool more well known and show off the innovative partnership between the NFL and SAP, a new “Stats Zone” was launched last year in New York City’s Super Bowl Boulevard. Making a return to Glendale, Arizona this year, the Stats Zone (which will be located in media center) will provide fans and media unique insights into what’s trending and how fans are talking about the Super Bowl on social media.

In addition, fans that are present at Super Bowl Central this year in Glendale will have the opportunity to make a broadcast video of their own to help vote for the NFL Honors Fantasy Player of the Year award. This is the first time that fans have had a chance to vote for the award, which will be presented by SAP on January 31.

Whether it’s powering the next generation of fantasy football insights or providing cloud-based solutions to the NFL and its team, SAP is powering the next evolution of business and football technology.
