USA Basketball Chair Jerry Colangelo "remains committed" to relocating the organization "to metro Phoenix" despite Arizona State Univ. ending negotiations with the developer of a planned $436M project for new USA Basketball HQ, according to Jeff Metcalfe of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. ASU last week in a statement said that it was "no longer working with developer Concord Eastridge because of multiple missed deadlines to secure financing." Colangelo said, "If in fact what's been announced is accurate then we have to let the smoke clear and see what that really means at the end of the day." He added, "My commitment to bringing USA Basketball to the state of Arizona has been a long one. That commitment hasn't changed whatsoever. The goal and objective was to have a home for USA Basketball in our state for all the right reasons. From my personal standpoint, there's a lot at stake." Colangelo said that he was "surprised by ASU's statement because of the anticipated ground breaking" in Q1 '15. Metcalfe notes Colangelo "first helped to broker a deal to move USA Basketball, which selects and trains teams for international competition including at the Olympics and World Championships, from its long-time home" in Colorado Springs to Glendale, but that project "fell apart" in '10 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 1/15).
