MLB Franchise Notes: Is Derek Jeter Mulling Investing In The Marlins?

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reported former MLBer Derek Jeter toured Marlins Park this week. Jeter has "never made a secret of his desire to buy into a team someday, and perhaps he's looking into the possibility of owning a share." Furthermore, Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria has "always been enamored" with the Yankees (ESPN.com, 12/4). In N.Y., Ken Davidoff notes Loria has "long denied the notion he’ll be selling anytime soon." Jeter "doesn’t possess the resources necessary to purchase even a cheaper club like the Marlins." He needs to "put together a consortium that would in turn appoint him as the control person." MLB naturally "would be thrilled to welcome Jeter into the ownership fold, and all the more so into a sad-sack market like Miami" (N.Y. POST, 12/5).

CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC: Twins President Dave St. Peter, when asked about the team’s season-ticket renewal campaign, said, “It’s ongoing, we’ve got another couple weeks to go in our renewal campaign. We haven’t finalized a percentage. I’m optimistic we’re going to land somewhere hopefully around 14,000-plus season tickets. Last year we were north of that (around 17,000 full-season equivalents), but there’s still great interest in this franchise. Ultimately we need to start building that season-ticket base back up” (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 12/5).

AGGRESSIVE ON THE BASE PATHS: The GLOBE & MAIL's Cathal Kelly writes maybe Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos "knows this is his last shot," and he "finally feels like things are coming together." Anthopoulos "tried to wait out the market" last year, but that "blew up on him." But this year he "learned his lesson." Anthopoulos "loves the free-for-all of the marketplace, but his employees require a minimum amount of certainty." Kelly: "Nobody likes to come to a job where the furniture is always getting moved around" (GLOBE & MAIL, 12/5).
