Awkward World Series Postgame Presentation Makes "Chevy Guy" Social Media Sensation

Giants P Madison Bumgarner was named MVP of the World Series for his historic performance and received a '15 Chevy Colorado for winning the honor, but Chevrolet Zone Manager for K.C. Rikk Wilde came away from the award presentation as the unofficial star. Wilde seemed to forget his prepared remarks while making the presentation, saying, "As the official sponsor or the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, Chevrolet is proud to participate in this prestigious award. Along with our dealers, we are also extremely honored to give back to this sport by supporting baseball in cities and towns across this nation. At Chevrolet, we have also been proud of the latest and greatest technology in our truck lineup, which is the all-new 2015 Chevy Colorado. It combines class, winning and leading, you know, technology and stuff with Wi-Fi powered by OnStar -- sitting there on-screen -- to recognize your performance in this 2014 World Series" ("Giants-Royals," Fox, 10/29). In DC, Des Bieler writes unlike Bumgarner, Wilde "was a tad less than cool under World Series pressure." Bieler: "Just a tremendous performance from a man who will likely never appear on camera again" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 10/30). The automaker indicated that Wilde was "still 'a little emotional' after watching his Kansas City Royals lose the big game." However, YAHOO AUTOS' Justin Hyde notes Chevy deserves credit "for knowing how to make the most of a situation." The automaker this morning put out the following tweet, "Truck yeah the 2015 #ChevyColorado has awesome #TechnologyAndStuff! You know you want a truck" (AUTOS.YAHOO.com, 10/30).

HIS 15 MINUTES OF FAME: In N.Y., Daniel O'Leary writes Twitter users "hammered" Wilde after the presentation. The #ChevyGuy "started trending" and comparisons to Chris Farley and Toronto Mayor Rob Ford "were thrown out there" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/30). The Philadelphia Daily News' Les Bowen wrote on Twitter, "The Chevy guy. Good lord. What he needs to say is 'you won this truck. Here.' Then he shuts up." The Detroit News' Bob Wojnowski: "Oh lord. This Chevy MVP presentation is quite possibly the worst thing ever seen on network tv." Grantland's Bill Barnwell: "This Chevy dude knew he was going to be on TV, right?" SI's Don Banks: "The crazy thing is, I'll bet you the Chevy guy thinks he killed it and is getting lucky tonight. He'll buy beers for the next three hours." Hockey player Paul Bissonnette: "Chevy knew what they were doing sending that guy in guys. And everyone reaps the benefits." ESPN's Sam Ponder: "I love #ChevyGuy. I'm a firm believer in ditching the prepared script & freelancing." ESPN's Michele Steele: "technology and stuff will always be so key to trucks or whatever." The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham: "Next year Chevy should hire @chrissyteigen to give away the truck. She could bring brownies for the winner maybe."
