Redskins Owner Dan Snyder yesterday said the organization has “started the process” of designing a new stadium, according to Daniel Martin of CSN WASHINGTON. Snyder: "Whether it's Washington, DC, whether it's another stadium in Maryland, whether it's a stadium in Virginia, we've started the process." FedExField opened in '97, but Snyder said that plans for a new stadium "have RFK in mind." He said, "We've already seen some preliminary drawings and I'm going to be very retro with it. It's gonna feel like RFK. It's gonna move like RFK. I love that, I actually asked architectural firms to do it and they said that they can do it. I said that I think the lower bowl sections are going to want to rock the stadium like the old days.” Snyder gave "no official timeline for approval," but said that the proposed designs could "then become a stadium that hosts a Super Bowl in the future" (CSNWASHINGTON.com, 8/27). In DC, Dan Steinberg noted the Redskins' lease at FedExField expires in '27. Rushern Baker III, the County Exec for Prince George County yesterday "reaffirmed his county's dedication to the Redskins" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 8/27). Richmond-based WWBT-NBC's Ryan Nobles reported Snyder "has met with" Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe to "discuss the potential of building a new stadium" in the state. McAuliffe has "carefully waded through the Redskins name controversy, a posture that could make Virginia the front runner" (NBC12.com, 8/27). In Richmond, Michael Phillips noted Snyder has "long indicated his preference is to build on the land currently occupied by RFK Stadium, although the DC City Council would likely refuse to turn over the land without a promise of a name change." Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley also has "publicly supported a name change, but continues to do business with the team" (TIMESDISPATCH.com, 8/27).
