Media Notes

In Phoenix, Andrew Joseph notes WFAN's Mike Francesa on Thursday criticized Kentucky men's basketball coach John Calipari on-air, calling him a "'master recruiter' and 'master motivator' but not a great x's-and-o's coach." Calipari "was not amused," and he "called in to the radio show as 'John from Kentucky' and let Francesa hear it." Calipari, who had already appeared on the same show from the WFAN studio, "sounds like a random caller, trying to stir the pot, but it's clear" that it was him on the other line. This was "all done in good fun, but maybe Francesa didn't get the joke as he hung up on Calipari" (AZCENTRAL.com, 8/21).

INSTANT UPDATE:
MULTICHANNEL NEWS' Jeff Baumgartner noted ESPN is the "latest cable programmer to target the really small screen with the launch of a sports scores app for the Pebble smartwatch." The app will "present scores from across all major pro leagues and college conferences, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL." The "new offering can track multiple games at once and can be configured to vibrate the smartwatch amid game updates and score changes" (MULTICHANNEL.com, 8/21).

SWEET SOUND: The Falcons announced ESPN Radio 790 Atlanta will be the "new FM home" of the team starting with Saturday’s game against the Titans. Landing the Falcons was a "major move" for the station, which debuted in October '12. Despite its "powerful 64,000 watt signal," it remains behind WCNN-AM, the "dominant No. 1 sports talk station" in Atlanta (AJC.com 8/21).

BACK IN BUSINESS: In Oklahoma City, Mel Bracht reported Austin-based Texas Crew Productions is "producing a documentary" on former NFLer Brian Bosworth that will be featured on ESPN (NEWSOK.com, 8/21).
