A recent performance review of former Colorado State AD Jack Graham found that he "clearly articulated his vision for CSU's athletic programs but generally didn't work well with others," according to Kelly Lyell of the Ft. Collins COLORADOAN. Graham, who was fired by CSU last week, received an overall review score of 2.34 on a scale of 1 to 5. He was "rated at the lowest levels, with average scores of less than 3, on 17 of the 31 questions posed to five of the nine people who reported directly to him." Asked to "rate the overall morale among employees of the athletic department," those reporting directly to Graham gave an average rating of 2.11, while peers and colleagues outside the department gave an average rating of 1.56. The review was conducted in late June by Transition Leadership President Tim Athey, who is also an affiliate professor in CSU's psychology department. The school paid $2,800 for the review, which surveyed "nine employees who report directly to the AD, 10 peers and colleagues and four others." It is "not clear what role the 360-degree performance review had in CSU President Tony Frank's decision" to fire Graham last Friday. Graham responded to the performance review summary, saying, "I'll let my record and my relationships with students, coaches, fans, donors and Colorado State University constituents speak for me. The CSU athletics program has been transformed -- people now expect great things" (Ft. Collins COLORADOAN, 8/14).
