Minnesota's Budget Decreases Slightly For '14-15 As School Prepares For NCAA Change

Minnesota's budget during the '13-14 athletic season was $96M and is "projected to decrease" to $95.7M in '14-15, according to Marcus Fuller of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. UM AD Norwood Teague told the school's Board of Regents on Wednesday that the "full cost of attendance per student on campus (non-athletes) is $1,600 more than what an athletic scholarship is worth." UM is "trying to plan for different scenarios, such as if all athletes would receive the adjusted compensation." Teague: "We're not sure if cost of attendance would apply to full-scholarship student-athletes or all student-athletes." He added,"We're doing a lot of calculations in trying to prepare for it. It could be quite a check, and it could adjust what we do in many ways. We'll just have to see how it all plays out." Fuller noted UM "could struggle with having to spend more money on athletes while attempting to produce funds to remain competitive with resources and facilities." Meanwhile, Teague in '13 unveiled a $190M "master facilities plan that included basketball and football practice facilities," and he announced Wednesday that the school will "go public with the fundraising portion of the plan in August." That next step "consists of allowing the public to get involved in donating, marketing and campaigning for the project and providing updates on donation levels" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 7/10).
