WGC-Match Play Championship Moving To S.F. For '15, Switching To Late Spring Date

The '15 WGC-Match Play Championship is "coming to Harding Park" in S.F. and also is "expected to move from February to May, improving the chances of dry conditions," according to Ron Kroichick of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The tournament was "held the past eight years at Dove Mountain outside Tucson." A source said that a news conference tomorrow centered around the '20 PGA Championship and '25 Presidents Cup at Harding Park will "include this Match Play announcement." The PGA Tour's commitment to hold the event in S.F. "covers only one year." But S.F. Recreation & Park GM Phil Ginsburg said, “The idea here is that Match Play has the potential to be a recurring event.” The PGA Tour’s contract with Match Play title sponsor Accenture "ended after this year’s event," and it "remains unclear who will serve as title sponsor" in '15. S.F.'s contract with the PGA Tour calls for a '16 FedExCup Playoff event (the BMW Championship) at Harding Park, and the Match Play will "replace the BMW in this revised deal" (SFGATE.com, 6/30).
