Big Ten ADs Not Interested In Expanding Alcohol Sales At Football Venues

Alcohol sales at college football stadiums have "become a topic on the national level," but in the Big Ten, it is "not on the agenda," according to Marc Morehouse of the Cedar Rapids GAZETTE. Iowa AD Gary Barta at yesterday's spring meetings "made it clear that no public alcohol sales are coming to Kinnick Stadium." He said, "It's not on my to-do list this summer." Barta added that the topic "wasn’t discussed during meetings this week." Morehouse notes Minnesota is the "lone school that allows sale of alcohol to the public in its football stadium." Iowa, Wisconsin, Purdue and Illinois "sell alcohol in premium seating areas." Iowa "doesn’t allow alcohol advertising" at Kinnick or Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Beyond Minnesota, there seems to be "no push for public alcohol sales among Big Ten schools" (Cedar Rapids GAZETTE, 5/15). Michigan State AD Mark Hollis yesterday said there has been "absolutely no discussion" about selling beer at Spartan Stadium. He added, "Are you adding beer as an amenity to your fans, or are you adding beer to drive revenues for your program? … If you’re adding beer, my perspective is you’re adding it to drive revenues. I’m just not ready to entertain that. I have not run the numbers." Hollis: "Football Saturdays are to be enjoyed, not abused, and I don’t want to contribute to abuse. And it’s unfortunate because like anything, the actions of a few can affect the many" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 5/15). Meanwhile, the AP reported Michigan is "seeking a temporary liquor license for Michigan Stadium when it hosts" the Int'l Champions Cup match between EPL club Manchester United and La Liga club Real Madrid (AP, 5/14).
