League Notes

ESPN.com's Ed Hinton wrote the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series' viewership "might be small," but its future is "solid as a rock." Team sponsorships "are the toughest part, and that's why the sparser schedule." ESPN THE MAGAZINE's Ryan McGee wrote taking the NCWTS decision to take April off "is nuts." The "best course for the Trucks series is to go back to its roots and race mostly non-companion events in markets that deserve NASCAR but likely will never host" a Sprint Cup race. ESPN.com's John Oreovicz wrote the NCWTS "just seems increasingly irrelevant." Oreovicz: "I still don't think NASCAR can continue to sustain three national championships" (ESPN.com, 5/6).

PRIX-MATURE: In Indianapolis, Curt Cavin wrote it "was a mistake" to call this weekend's inaugural IndyCar road course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway a grand prix. The Grand Prix Of Indianapolis "should have been something different, and maybe it will be once IMS rolls out a title sponsor" for '15. This "is an event that can grow because a lot of the uncertainty about the event will go away with this race." Current issues include "confusion over the event name" and a "lack of awareness that this is actually an IndyCar race" like the Indy 500 (INDYSTAR.com, 5/5).

NEW LEAF: The GLOBE & MAIL's Jeff Brooke noted Golf Canada has selected five Canadian prospects "for its Young Pro program, giving each $15,000 a year and a host of support services, including coaching." The players "can stay in the program as long as they reach certain performance benchmarks that show improvement." The program also is tied to Canada’s "push to create competitive Olympians, similar" to the Own the Podium initiative. The money "is coming out of Golf Canada’s foundation, which derives revenue from private and corporate donors, as well as from pro-am tournaments held before the RBC Canadian Open and Canadian Pacific Women’s Open" (GLOBE & MAIL, 5/6).
