Roger Goodell Criticized During Twitter Q&A With NFL Fans, Media Members

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell yesterday “took over the league's Twitter account,” soliciting questions from fans who tweeted at him with the hashtag #AskCommish, and the results were “fairly predictable,” according to Daniel O’Leary of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. The Twitter “trolls, and some professional media members, were out in full force to jump all over Goodell for many of his decisions as the league's head man.” No topic -- be it the Redskins “nickname controversy, head injuries, gay athletes or Jimmy Haslam's legal woes -- was out of bounds.” While some “touched on real problems with today's NFL, many of the questions were just plain ridiculous.” Goodell “steered clear of most all of the trap questions, but indulged once or twice” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 5/7). POLITICO’s Lucy McCalmont noted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) “took to Twitter” to once again push Goodell to “change the name” of the Redskins. Reid has been a “vocal critic" of the name, but his tweet to Goodell “went unanswered” (POLITICO.com, 5/6). CBSSPORTS.com’s Josh Katzowitz wrote Goodell during the session was “political, funny and not-necessarily enlightening.” Katzowitz wrote of Reid’s tweet to Goodell, “I’m sure everything was settled between the two by DM.” Either that or it will “have to happen the next time Goodell is subpoenaed to testify in front of Congress” (CBSSPORTS.com, 5/6). SI.com’s Nicole Conlan wrote things “went off the rails pretty quickly (you’d think they would have learned from the #AskEmmert debacle) and before long #AskCommish was a top trending topic for the wrong (or perfect) reasons” (SI.com, 5/6). In Boston, Robert Burgess wrote under the header, “Twitter Q&A Backfires On Roger Goodell” (BOSTON.com, 5/6).
