Marketplace Roundup

In London, Christian Sylt reported Subway is "considering a ground-breaking sponsorship deal with Formula One which could see several of the sport’s teams and superstar drivers teaming up to promote the brand." Great Britain is the QSR's "biggest market outside America." Just Marketing Int'l Founder & CEO Zak Brown, whose firm handles Subway's motorsports marketing, called F1 the "perfect" fit. JMI is "responsible for bringing Subway to F1’s American rival NASCAR, where it sponsors a team, a driver and a race." Brown said that it is "likely Subway would follow the same model in F1" (London TELEGRAPH, 4/13).

DAN IN REAL LIFE: USA TODAY's Brent Schrotenboer reported the National Indian Gaming Association "canceled its sponsorship of a charity golf tournament in Arizona on Saturday because it doesn't want to be associated" with Redskins Owner Dan Snyder and his Original Americans Foundation, which serves as the event's title sponsor. The cancellation marks "the latest controversy" involving the team's foundation (USATODAY.com, 4/12).

WHALE WATCHING: In Boston, Kevin Paul Dupont noted there "remains robust interest" in Hartford Whalers paraphernalia in the New England area. The former NHL team's merchandise is "so popular, in fact, that the Connecticut State Lottery last November rolled out a $3 Whaler scratch ticket." NHL CMO Brian Jennings said that Whalers-related items "continue to be in high demand as part of the league's Vintage Program" (BOSTON GLOBE, 4/13).
