Magic's Attendance, TV Ratings Down After Tough Season, But Sales Still Good

The Magic's "on-court struggles have eroded attendance" at Amyway Center, as the team through Friday has "averaged an announced crowd ... of 16,180 fans per game," according to Josh Robbins of the ORLANDO SENTINEL. That is a decrease of 8% from last season and 14.4% from the '11-12 season. City of Orlando records, which "list the number of tickets scanned at arena entrances at each game, show that an average of 12,681 people attended the Magic's first 38 home games this season." That is a decrease of 7.1% "from last season's scan count" and 20.3% from the '11-12 season. But Magic CEO Alex Martins said, "We have reached all of our goals that we had set out for the year in terms of our ticket sales for this season." Martins said that the team "sold just under 11,000 season tickets for this season and added that so far the season-ticket renewal rate" for the '14-15 season is on track to be anywhere from 85-90%. Martins said that this percentage "would be the highest season-ticket renewal rate in five years." Martins said that this season, the Magic "set team records for tourism sales, group ticket sales and sales of five- and seven-game mini-plans." Meanwhile, the team's losses "over the last two seasons have taken a toll on television ratings for Magic games." Nielsen ratings show that during the '11-12 regular season, the team's games on FS Florida and Sun Sports "drew an average audience of 32,818 households per game within the Orlando/Daytona Beach/Melbourne market." This season, Magic games on FS Florida "drew an average audience of 12,214 households through April 5" -- down 62.7% from the '11-12 season and 13.6% from last season. Martins said that this season's corporate partnership sales "tied an all-time high for the franchise" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 4/13).
