Univ. Of Arizona Thinking About Playing Future Basketball Game Outside At Football Stadium

The Univ. of Arizona has had "preliminary talks about holding" a men's basketball game in Arizona Stadium, according to Bruce Pascoe of the ARIZONA DAILY STAR. New Mexico coach Craig Neal "first made the idea public on his radio show Monday, saying there are talks to play UA at Arizona Stadium and then return the game at The Pit." However, UA AD Greg Byrne said that the "preliminary talks are with a 'couple of' schools." Byrne: "There was nothing that was even close to being done on it, so we were surprised they let it out." UA basketball coach Sean Miller added, "We have some ideas within our own athletic department of trying to take advantage of the uniqueness of our fan base and the incredible weather. That's thrown out there. I don't know if that will ever happen." Byrne said that he "wasn't sure when an outside game would be played, whether for 2015-16 or beyond, but it would likely be in the very early season, when the weather is most consistent" (ARIZONA DAILY STAR, 2/26). In Albuquerque, Geoff Grammer wrote Neal following his radio show "apparently realized he may have overstepped with his comments." Neal had UNM Assistant AD/Communications Frank Mercogliano "send a text message to Albuquerque area media asking to not make much of the comments, that the talks were in very preliminary stages, and that Neal regretted saying what he did" (ABQJOURNAL.com, 2/25).
