Sources: Islanders Will Honor Nassau Coliseum Lease, Move To Barclays Center In '15

The Islanders "will honor their lease with Nassau County and remain at the Nassau Coliseum" through the end of the '14-15 NHL season before moving to Barclays Center, according to sources cited by Brodsky & Marshall of NEWSDAY. The sources said that the team had "preliminary discussions in recent months" about leaving Nassau Coliseum at the end of this season, but "the conversations never advanced and the idea was scrapped." Forest City Ratner Chair & CEO Bruce Ratner in August said it was "highly likely" the Islanders would complete their lease. But Ratner and Islanders officials "had declined to slam the door on an early departure." The Islanders "have leases with Nassau County" and SMG, which manages the arena. All three parties "would have had to sign off on a deal allowing the Islanders to leave a year early." Nassau Deputy County Exec Rob Walker said that a formal plan to break the lease "was never presented to the county." Walker: "No one came to us" (NEWSDAY, 1/23).
