Univ. Of Kansas Sends Cease-And-Desist To Popular, But Risque, Twitter Account

A "mini-controversy brewed" last night, when Twitter account @KUBoobs, which "specializes in, well … you get it, announced that it had received a 'cease-and-desist' letter from the University of Kansas stating that it had to shut down" by tomorrow, according to Rustin Dodd of the K.C. STAR. KU Associate AD/Public Affairs Jim Marchiony said that the Twitter account's assertion is "only partially correct." Marchiony wrote on his Twitter feed, “KU is not trying to shut down the @KUboobs Twitter account. A Twitter account is one thing. But they’re selling merchandise with KU on it." Marchiony also tweeted that KU had "simply asked the account to stop selling any merchandise that might infringe on the Jayhawks’ trademark" (K.C. STAR, 6/11). FOXSPORTS.com's Tully Corcoran notes the account has "grown into a small business, selling wristbands and other merchandise that includes the letters 'KU.'" The account "does not profess to be affiliated with the university in any official capacity, but it also doesn't make it explicitly clear that it isn't, and the school isn't so much worried about the Twitter account as it is the sale of merchandise." The website KUboobs.com "appears to have been taken down" as of last night (FOXSPORTS.com, 6/11).
