CBS Sports has promoted
DAVID BERSON to President, positioning the 40-year-old exec as heir apparent to network Chair
SEAN MCMANUS. McManus said, "I have no plans to go anywhere in the near future. I still love what I do. But David has earned the right to have a larger role at CBS Sports, and at some point, if things go according to plan, he will be running CBS Sports." McManus' current deal with CBS runs for another three years. The promotion was McManus' idea, envisioned when he hired Berson in '11 as CBS Sports Exec VP and CBS Sports Network President. Berson: "The opportunity to continue to learn from Sean is one that I value greatly." Berson will continue to report to McManus and will have a larger role overseeing the day-to-day management of the division. McManus: "On larger strategic issues and larger production issues, I will still be very involved. I will slowly let David take over some of the day-to-day responsibility: negotiations with our talent, programming decisions, personnel decisions." Berson came to CBS after a 16-year stint at ESPN. In his three years at CBS, Berson doubled the amount of live programming on CBS Sports Net and has represented CBS alongside McManus during negotiations with rightsholders like the SEC. McManus said of Berson, "He's one of the rare people in our industry who has a very good feeling for programming, business affairs and production. He's built very strong relationships, both inside and outside the company."
