NBPA Leaders Meet With NHL, MLB Union Heads To Figure Out Potential Hunter Successors
NBPA officials met with NHLPA Exec Dir Don Fehr and MLBPA Exec Dir Michael Weiner last month as "part of their effort to find a new head for the players union," according to Liz Mullen of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. NBPA Exec Committee member Jerry Stackhouse and NBPA Deputy General Counsel Ron Klempner, who has been acting as the Exec Dir since Billy Hunter's departure, "attended a meeting with Fehr and Weiner at the MLBPA headquarters." Stackhouse said that the players are "in 'no rush' to replace" Hunter. He added that NBPA leaders "want to take their time in rebuilding the union and involve players." Mullen notes Fehr's name has been "mentioned as a potential successor to Hunter; but he reafirmed last week that he intends to stay at the NHLPA." Stackhouse said that he was "seeking information on how unions are run, as well as the processes unions have used to elect an executive director" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 5/20 issue).
