Shelter From The Storm: Sports Organizations, Teams Donate Money For Sandy Relief

Multiple sports organizations and individuals have announced donations to the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The following non-comprehensive list highlights some of notable donations to the recovery efforts from the sports world.

SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS
LEAGUES
NFL, NFLPA: Jointly pledged $1M to the American Red Cross. They also ran pre- and in-game messages promoting donations during games last weekend.
MLB, MLBPA: Donated $1M to benefit the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and Feeding America.
NBA, NBPA: Donated $1M to the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, New York Cares and Jersey Cares.
NASCAR: Hosting an online auction, with proceeds going to Save the Children, Feeding America and AmeriCares.
MLS: Included links to the American Red Cross on its website, encouraging visitors to make donations.
N.Y. Road Runners: Pledged $1M for recovery efforts.
USTA: Donated $300,000 worth of clothing, bottled water and soap. Donated $100,000 to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.
N.Y. AREA TEAMS
Islanders: Hosting a free, open skate at Nassau Coliseum on Monday, Nov. 12. The team will collect donations for the American Red Cross.
Mets: Hosting a food drive on Nov. 14 at the entrance of Citi Field. Those who donate can receive tickets and discounts on team merchandise.
Yankees: Donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross. Also collecting donations at Yankee Stadium.
Giants: Donated $500,000 to the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. Also hosted a food drive at MetLife Stadium on Nov. 4; fans donated 38,000 pounds of food and more than $18,000.
Jets: Announced via Twitter that the team would donate $500,000 to relief efforts.
Madison Square Garden: Donated $500,000 and is hosting a telethon on the MSG Network during Friday's Knicks-Mavericks game. Proceeds will go to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City and the American Red Cross. The arena also will host a benefit concert Dec. 12. The concert is being organized by the same organization that put together the Concert For New York City following the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
PROFESSIONAL FRANCHISES
Vikings, Wilf family: Jointly pledged $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
Colts: Donated $65,000 to Hurricane Sandy relief. Owner Jim Irsay matched online donations up to $1 per fan in attendance at Dolphins-Colts game on Nov. 4.
Predators, Blues: Hosting a charity alumni game at A-Game Sportsplex in Franklin, Tenn. on Nov. 10. Proceeds will go to Hurricane Sandy relief and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
A's: The team's community fund is accepting monetary donations and sending proceeds to The Salvation Army and the Humane Society.
Thunder: Fans attending the Nov. 2 game were able to bid on Thunder autographed items, including a team-signed ball; a portion of the proceeds went to the American Red Cross.
Magic: Donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross.
Seahawks, MLS Sounders: Red Cross volunteers collected cash donations at CenturyLink Field to help in storm relief before games.
Dolphins: Donated $500,000 to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. The team also will donate the net proceeds from the sale of individual game tickets for Sunday's game against the Titans that are purchased between 9:00am ET, Thursday and kickoff to the Anerican Red Cross South Florida Region.
Lakers: Donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross to assist victims. Additionally, the team promised to match up to an additional $50,000 of donations from fans.
OTHER ORGANIZATIONS
St. Lawrence Univ. Athletic Department: Hosting a clothing drive and fundraiser. The football team will deliver the proceeds to the Red Cross on Long Island when it travels to Kings Point to play the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Nov. 10.
ING: Pledged $500,000 to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
Lowe's: Pledged $1M to Hurricane Sandy relief. Lowe's also matched NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson's earnings from the AAA Texas 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 4 and donated $500,000 to the American Red Cross.
Lacrosse.com, STX: Jointly established the Lacrosse Recovery Fund, with 100% of the proceeds from the Lacrosse Recovery Fund T-Shirt going to the American Red Cross.
Univ. of Kentucky men's basketball team: Held two telethons to raise funds for Hurricane Sandy victims. Coach John Calipari afterward tweeted that the effort raised nearly $1M.
NYRA: Donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
PEOPLE
Jack and Susan Rudin and the Rudin Family Foundations: Donated $1.1M to relief efforts.
Packers S Charles Woodson: Donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
Heat G Dwyane Wade: Donated last Friday's game check to relief efforts.
Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban: Pledged via Twitter to donate $1M to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.
