USC Sees All-Time High Athletic-Related Revenue For '11-12; UCLA Also Sees Spike

Increased donations and corporate sponsorship "allowed USC to post a record" $84.19M in athletic-related revenue for the '11-12 academic report, according to U.S. Department of Education documents cited by Scott Reid of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. The figure is nearly a $10M increase "over USC's athletic revenues for the 2010-11 academic year." Despite NCAA sanctions and a bowl ban, USC "still brought in" $34.4M in football-related revenues in '11-12, an increase from $31.1M in '10-11. The school had $23.1M in "football expenses." USC also reported $4.85M in men's basketball expenses and $4.8M "in revenues." Meanwhile, UCLA reported revenues of $70.74M this past academic year, a $4.7M increase "over the previous year." UCLA reported $25.1M in "football revenue," with $19.19M in football expenses. The school saw $8.37M in men's basketball revenue, down from $11.6M the previous year "largely because UCLA had to play its home games off-campus because of the Pauley Pavilion renovation." Revenues from the Pac-12 Network and the conference's other TV contracts "should further drive up revenue figures for both USC and UCLA for the current academic year" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 10/16). USC COO & CFO Steve Lopes said that an extra home football game, "large crowds in the second half of the season, and increased donations and corporate sponsorships contributed to the overall growth" (L.A. TIMES, 10/17).
