Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Trumps Players As Franchise's Star Attraction

Cowboys Owner JERRY JONES has “become more visible than nearly all of his current players, except maybe much-maligned" QB TONY ROMO,” according to a profile by Jarrett Bell on the cover of the sports section of USA TODAY. Jones has appeared in “countless commercials” and made an appearance on HBO’s “Entourage.” Jones sees his persona “as a window to the NFL.” Jones said, "I've never had one thought that I'm going to upstage the Cowboys. I'm well aware of what TEX (SCHRAMM), TOM (LANDRY), TROY (AIKMAN), ROGER (STAUBACH), (TONY) DORSETT have contributed. That's why I'll never upstage that." Pro Football HOFer MICHAEL IRVIN said, "I didn't believe there was another level after what Tex Schramm, Tom Landry and GIL BRANDT built. Jerry has taken their ceiling and made it his floor." Bell writes if induction into the Pro Football HOF “was merely about fame, Jones would have already been enshrined.” Patriots Owner ROBERT KRAFT “appreciates Jones’ skill as a businessman.” Kraft said, "He's one of the greatest salesmen ever" (USA TODAY, 9/14).

SEEING EYE-TO-EYE: In Dallas, David Moore reported Jerry Wipes, the product Jones’ son-in-law SHY ANDERSON created after being spotted during a game broadcast cleaning Jones’ eye glasses, “temporarily disappeared from the team’s website Thursday afternoon, less than 24 hours after it appeared, because the Cowboys sold their complete inventory.” A second order “has been placed and is now available for purchase” (DALLASNEWS.com, 9/13). In Ft. Worth, Clarence Hill reported the Cowboys are “donating all the money for charity” from the sale of Jerry Wipes. Each purchase from the Cowboys’ website for the $2.99 product is going to the Salvation Army (STAR-TELEGRAM.com, 9/13).
