Michigan Unveils Alternate Uniform For Season Opener Against Alabama

The Univ. of Michigan football team will "wear a special jersey for the season opener against defending national champion Alabama on Sept. 1 in the Cowboys Classic game at Cowboys Stadium," according to Angelique Chengelis of the DETROIT NEWS. UM last night unveiled the special edition adidas uniform, featuring a "white road jersey with maize across the shoulders and down to the sleeve." Blue piping "separates the maize from the white, and there's a blue block 'M' on the left and right sleeves of the jersey and the numbers are in blue." The team will wear "maize pants with a blue block 'M' on the left hip." Their gloves will "feature lyrics to 'The Victors,' the school's fight song" (DETROIT NEWS, 7/24). In Ann Arbor, Kyle Meinke noted the team also will wear "helmet numbers against Alabama, as they did down the stretch last year, but then scrap them for the rest of the season." This will be the team's "only alternate look of the regular season." The new uniform "closely resembles what the Wolverines wore on the road against Michigan State last year." UM wore "pronounced maize and blue shoulder stripes against the Spartans last year, a look that received mixed reviews." The uniform was "toned down in the team's Sugar Bowl version." The new uniform "seems to be a mash-up of the two" (ANNARBOR.com, 7/23).
