Pac-12's Larry Scott Is Highest Paid Conference Commissioner, Earned $1.9M In '10

Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott earned nearly $1.9M in "salary and bonuses” during his first full year at the post in ’10, according to Steve Berkowitz of USA TODAY. That figure is “more than three times his predecessor’s final full-year compensation and more than any other major-college conference commissioner" received in ’10. Among the "other current commissioners of power conferences," the Big Ten’s Jim Delany made nearly $1.8M in calendar '10, the ACC’s John Swofford nearly $1.5M and the SEC’s Mike Slive just more than $1M. Swofford’s pay represents “a nearly 27% increase over the amount reported for him” in ’09. Delany’s pay “increased about 9%, and Slive’s was unchanged.” Former Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe, who resigned in Sept., received nearly $1.7M in '10, "nearly 70% higher" than his '09 compensation. Former Big East Commissioner John Marinatto "received little more than" $600,000 in '10. Berkowtiz notes Scott replaced Tom Hansen, who “had the job for 26 years.” In calendar ’08, Hansen "earned a little less than" $590,000. Among commissioners “outside the power conferences," Conference USA’s Britton Banowsky earned nearly $900,000 and the Mountain West’s Craig Thompson a little more than $600,000 (USA TODAY, 5/23).
