Padres, City Of San Diego Look To Bring More Off-Season Events To Petco Park

The Padres and the city of San Diego "have crafted a new agreement to encourage more off-season events after two years of disappointing revenue" at Petco Park, according to Jen Lebron Kuhney of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The City Council yesterday "voted unanimously" to support the new deal that would give 70% of offseason revenues to the Padres to "help cover some of their overhead costs, and the rest would go to the city." The city "would be guaranteed" at least $300,000 annually. The current arrangement calls for the city to receive 70% of the revenue while the Padres collect 30% "during the fall and winter months." The team said that the current split "is a disincentive for hosting events considering overhead costs mean the Padres barely break even on smaller events" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 5/22).
