Fashion Disaster: Steelers' '34 Throwback Uniforms Panned By Critics

The Steelers Tuesday unveiled the throwback uniforms they will wear for two games this season to commemorate the franchise's 80th year -- a nod to the '34 team -- and a lot of people believed the uniforms were “a joke, but this is real,” according to ESPN's Michelle Beadle. The jerseys feature alternating yellow and black horizontal stripes with white rectangular blocks for the numbers. Beadle said, "I personally think it looks like a joke of a prison uniform” (“SportsNation,” ESPN2, 4/18). ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser said the jerseys were described as looking like “the Hamburglar runs into a beehive.” Kornheiser: “This whole throwback thing is getting wearisome for me” (“PTI,” ESPN, 4/18). ESPN’s Dan Le Batard said of the horizontal stripes, “Defensive lineman are not going to like that. That makes your belly look larger. That is not thinning right there. There’s a Hamburglar thing going on” (“Dan Le Batard Is Highly Questionable,” ESPN2, 4/18). In Albany, Chuck Miller wrote, “These are the Pittsburgh Steelers, not the opposition team from ‘The Longest Yard!’ Oh my God in holy heaven…” (TIMESUNION.com, 4/18). ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley wrote, “Every time [Steelers K] Shaun Suisham lines up for a field goal, I'll be wondering if the holder is going to yank the ball away because the uniforms also have a Charlie Brown-like quality about them” (ESPN.com, 4/17). YAHOO SPORTS' Chris Chase wrote the uniforms look like “bumblebees in prison.” However, after “letting it marinate for a while and resisting the urge to mug someone for honey: Somehow, it still works” (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 4/17). In Pittsburgh, Ed Bouchette wrote, “The real shame would be to see one of the great NFL plays or records set by players wearing one of those ugly uniforms” (POST-GAZETTE.com, 4/18).

PACKING IT UP: The Packers “quietly announced Tuesday that they ‘will forego using their historic third jersey’ in 2012.” That jersey, which was “worn first in December 2010 and again last October, is similar to the one worn by the Packers in the first decade of the team's existence.” The Packers “have the option of wearing it for home games through the 2014 season” (GREENBAYPRESSGAZETTE.com, 4/18).
