Tide Capitalizes On Daytona 500 Spill With New Ad Using Footage From Clean-Up

Laundry detergent brand Tide ran an ad during Fox' coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Subway Fresh Fit 500 yesterday in an attempt to "capitalize on the ... unexpected product placement on the network last week," according to Michael McCarthy of USA TODAY. Viewers last week "saw safety workers using Tide to clean the track after a fiery crash at Daytona International Speedway covered Turn 3 with 200 gallons of jet fuel" during the Daytona 500. Tide was "smart enough to capitalize immediately." The new commercial "shows footage of Daytona workers using Tide, with the tagline: 'You keep inventing stains. We'll keep inventing ways to get them out'" (USA TODAY, 3/5). SB NATION's Jeff Gluck noted Tide is "no longer in NASCAR, but used to sponsor the 'Tide Ride' driven by Darrell Waltrip, Ricky Rudd and Ricky Craven." It was most recently seen in the "Sprint Cup Series being driven by Bobby Hamilton Jr. and Travis Kvapil at the former PPI Racing team -- but to little or no success (SBNATION.com, 3/4).
