Nike Positions Social Media For Major Product Announcement Next Week

Nike is “gearing up for a major product announcement Jan. 19,” according to Allan Brettman of the Portland OREGONIAN. The company at the start of the year “launched a new Twitter handle -- @Nike -- and slogan, ‘Make It Count,’ geared around the Jan. 19 event in New York.” A Nike website “devoted to the Twitter handle and the slogan” includes the large numbers "01.19.12." Brettman notes until this year, only “separate divisions of Nike sports have had Twitter accounts -- from soccer, to baseball, to football, to tennis and golf.” The handle @Nike “marks the first time the company has had a voice tweeting on behalf of the entire company.” Several people in a N.Y. office “are responding to Twitter followers, based on a video shot of the crew by a Nike communications staff member.” Huge letters on a wall saying, "Make It Count," surround “perhaps a dozen or so people sitting at keyboards” (Portland OREGONIAN, 1/11).
