NYRR Increases Marathon Entry Fee Between 24-39% To Pay For Police Coverage

Entry fees for the ING N.Y. Marathon in November “jumped about $60, or 24 to 39 percent” depending on the entrant, “largely because the New York Police Department has begun charging event organizers to recoup its costs,” according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES. Members of New York Road Runners “must pay $216 this year to enter the marathon, compared with $156 last year.” For U.S. residents who are not club members, the fee “increased to $255, from $196,” and accepted international applicants “will pay $347, up from $281.” NYRR to offset the higher costs is "planning to increase the size of the marathon as well as their biggest half-marathon, the NYC Half in March, which will grow to 15,000 runners this year, 50 percent larger than last year.” NYRR began accepting applications for lottery slots yesterday, and “early demand was strong.” Nearly “17,500 lottery applications were received in the first five hours.” Belson notes applicants have “a roughly 1-in-10 chance of being accepted through the lottery” (N.Y. TIMES, 1/3).
