USSF Releases Budget For FY '13, Projects $6.6M Deficit

The U.S. Soccer Federation released its budget for fiscal year '13, which covers April 2012-March 2013, and the organization is "projecting a $6.6 million deficit" during that year, according to Steven Goff of the WASHINGTON POST. The USSF is eyeing a $8.8M operating deficit, which would be "offset some by $2.2 million investment income." The $6.6M deficit is an increase of the $4.5M deficit projected for FY '12. The USSF the past two fiscal years "banked surpluses totaling more than $8 million, most of it coming from investment income." Goff noted the budget shows revenue in FY ’13 will come "from sponsors ($12.5 million); men’s and women’s national team events ($11.6 million); player and membership registration ($5.7 million); referee registration ($3 million); and coaching programs ($1.5 million)." Nike "earmarked an additional $5.9 million for player development programs." Meanwhile, the two Victory Tour matches for the U.S. women’s national team this fall "grossed $1.1 million in ticket sales (35,000 total)." The U.S. men’s national team friendly against Spain in June "netted $4.7 million in ticket sales (64,000) and revenue." Should the women’s team qualify for the '12 London Games, the USSF would bring in "an additional $250,000 from sponsors." Team expenses are "projected at $1.8 million and winning the gold medal would trigger more than $1 million in bonuses for the player pool and a Victory Tour of up to 10 games" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 12/12).
